Coins from 1953-1966 weigh 2.33 grams with a diameter of 18.034 mm and have a composition of .800 silver, .200 copper.
Coins from 1967 weigh 2.33 grams with a diameter of 18.034 mm and have a composition of .800 silver, .200 copper or .500 silver, .500 copper.
Coins from 1968 weigh (silver) 2.33 grams (nickel) 2.07 grams with a diameter of 18.034 mm and have a composition of .500 silver, .500 copper or .99 nickel.
Coins from 1969-date weigh 2.07 grams with a diameter of 18.034 mm and have a composition of .99 nickel.

Two obverse were used from 1953-1964, the "no shoulder fold" and the "shoulder fold". In 1965, a new obverse with a more mature facial feature and wearing a tiara was introduced. A reverse design of a mackerel was used for the centennial of Confederation in 1967. During 1968, the use of silver was discontinued and nickel was used in its place.
